Joseph S. Schoeniger, M.D. Ph.D.

At SNL/CA I have established programs to develop biosensors, bioanalytical instrumentation and co-founded a new major facility, the Chemical and Radiation Detector Laboratory. Projects I have initiated include development of organophospate sensor based on enzyme coated ion-sensitive field effect transistors, use of sol-gel techniques for improved fiber- optic sensors, development of ultrasensitive fluorescence-based assays for biotoxins using self-assembled materials, affinity electrochromatography with LIF detection, microelectrode array-based sensors for pathogen detection, and the use of combinatorial chemical synthesis and computational design of molecular recognition materials for sensor and antitoxin development.

Recently, my research activities, funded by DOE and other government sponsors, have focused on the development of novel microseparations methods for proteins, peptides and DNA, and the intersection of these methods with classical protein chemistry, as well as analytical methods such as high-resolution mass spectrometry, for solving outstanding problems in proteomics and structural genomics.
